Gas To Energy

The Wayne Township Landfill's commitment to reducing, reusing, and recycling is evidenced by our landfill gas (LFG) recovery system. The LFG collected by the system was utilized by the Jersey Shore Steel Company (JSS) for nearly 20 years. In 2015 both parties reached an amicable agreement to end the almost 20 year partnership regarding the steel mill's use of the landfill gas. As a result, WTL is actively pursuing a new customer(s) for utilization of the alternate energy source. Please stay tuned for updates regarding the utilization of the landfill gas generated by the WTL.

LFG is typically 50% methane and is a serious contributor to global warming. The gas is also a source of odor and smog pollution. By utilizing LFG as an alternative energy source, JSS improved Clinton County by reducing air pollution and tapping into an otherwise wasted source of useable energy. WTL provided JSS with approximately 1,000 cubic feet per minute of LFG, which equals 30 million BTUs per hour. By utilizing LFG JSS realizes significant fuel savings when compared to utilization of natural gas. This valuable partnership with JSS was just one of the ways that the Wayne Township Landfill strives to make a difference in preserving the environment.

During our partnership with JSS, over 1.2 million MMBTU of LFG was provided as an alternative fuel for their furnace. By using LFG, the steel company realized a savings of over $5,000,000 in fuel costs.
