Wayne Township Landfill

The landfill has employed landfill gas (LFG) recovery for over 30 years. The LFG collected by the system was historically sold to a neighboring steel company through 2015. The Authority has partnered with Terreva Renewables (TR) to purchase LFG and to process it as a renewable energy source. Gas has been going to market since May 2023. TR operates the processing plant and the wellfield. TR’s plant refines the LFG to pipeline quality gas and qualifies it for Renewable Energy Numbers (RIN’s), delivers and sells the renewable gas. The Authority receives a royalty of the gross sales and the Authority anticipates in excess of $500,000 per year in revenue from these sales. The term of this partnership is 20 years and sales volumes should grow as waste volumes placed at WTL increase. The mined trash from the old closed landfill that is being recycled into a new landfill, produces high quality LFG shortly after it is mined and placed on top of the liner system.
